You guys! Let me TELL you about Mexico. All sun, all the time. (except for those two days of rain). True Confession: I had never been to Mexico before this trip! We stayed at the Royalton Riviera, which is an all-inclusive resort in Benito Juarez, Cancun. True Confession: I had never been to an all-inclusive resort before either. This place had so many pools and swim-up bars with the mojitos flowin’ (or Miami Vices, if you’re my friend Danielle – who even knows what that is?? Her, apparently.) Anyway, we had the best time celebrating our friends’ wedding right on the beach and dancing in the sand for hours (still sore). TAKE. ME. BACK. I’m excited to share this book/look combo with you—a beachy dress with a YA novel that makes a good, but kind of serious, beach read. Enjoy!
BOOK: American Street by Ibi Zoboi
When Fabiola Toussaint and her mother leave Haiti and arrive in America, Fabiola thinks she is leaving the tough times behind. That could not be further from the truth as her mother is detained by US Immigration and she is forced to make it Detroit all by herself to live with her aunt and cousins. These people might as well be strangers with the way they look and act, but Fabiola knows they are family and tries to adjust as best she can. Is life in Detroit any better than it was in Haiti? Fabiola is not so sure. American Street follows her as she loves, loses, and faces seemingly impossible choices.
This novel was sort of an unexpected find for me. It was given to me as a gift and I didn’t know much about it, but the back cover blurb was enough to lure me in. I loved so much about this novel, but what I loved most of all is Fabiola’s spirit throughout. She embodies innocence but will stop at nothing to protect her family, almost to a fault. Ibi Zoboi’s voice is beautiful and so needed, and her bio is incredible. The emotion behind the writing fills the pages and makes it a can’t-put-it-down novel. Heartbreaking yet hopeful, American Street is a winner. Keep ‘em comin’, Ibi. Side Note: American Street makes a great text-pairing (Where my teacher friends at?) with The Hate U Give, which I posted about a few weeks ago.
LOOK: Wrap Dress – fab’rik
Is this not the perfect vacation dress?! I love the pattern and the midi-maxi length from front to back. This is the first wrap dress I have ever owned (gasp!), so it took me a minute to figure out how the wrap part of it worked with the ties (I swear I’m smart), but once I got that squared away it was smooth sailing! I do wish I could have made the straps a little tighter, but because of the cut of the mini ruffle sleeves, it wasn’t happening. This dress fits true to size and was long enough to wear with flat sandals or wedges/heels. INSIDER TIP – If you sign up for fab’rik text alerts you get major deals and offer codes. I got this dress for 40% off! xo
