The Last Thing He Told Me

Hi, everyone!  I’m blogging today from sunny California, and I am v. excited to have some much-needed reading and relaxing time.  The first book I finished on vacation is The Last Thing He Told Me, and I am certain a lot of you will want to add this novel to your summer reading list!

BOOK: The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

"We don't turn away from the parts of someone we don't want to see.  However quickly or long it takes to see them.  We accept them if we are strong enough.  Or we accept them enough to not let the bad parts become the entire story.”

The latest from Laura Dave (Eight Hundred Grapes; Hello, Sunshine), The Last Thing He Told Me is the calmly-unfolding mystery you need in your life.  It is the May pick for Reese’s Book Club, and it is such a Reese’s Book Club pick if ya know what I mean.  It’s a page-turning, mysterious, want-to-talk-to-everyone-about-it kind of book.  And I want to talk to everyone about it, especially the ending (which I loved but could see people not loving).  Here are the deets:

Owen Michaels mysteriously disappears after the company he works for is caught in some major legal trouble, leaving behind just two words in a note to his wife Hannah.  “Protect her,” the note reads, and not only is Hannah scrambling to locate her missing husband, but now she is wondering what kind of danger she and Owen’s daughter Bailey (who doesn’t give Hannah the time of day) may be in.  It’s up to Hannah to protect Bailey, but from what or whom?  Hannah needs to find out what’s really going on, and the FBI and US Marshals are totally not helping.  Taking search matters into their own hands, Hannah and Bailey unexpectedly join forces, finding themselves in Austin, Texas, where family secrets are revealed as they find out who Owen really is and what made him run.

I loved so much about this novel, and it was just what I needed after a few longer/slower books.  It’s mysterious but not stressful; does that make sense?  Like it’s not going to give you any holy-shit, heart-racing vibes, but it is the kind of slow burn that makes a mystery/disappearance novel so great.  You’ll be playing detective right alongside Hannah and Bailey as they search for Owen and try to put together the pieces of his past and what he might be hiding from.  I admire Hannah’s determination and the way she knows how to navigate a teenage stepdaughter.  The ending is both really sweet and really heartbreaking.  Is that a thing?  I’m making it a thing.

I’m telling you, this one is perfect for summer reading because it is a quick read, and engaging story, and it looks great in a photograph with a beach/pool in the background (and sometimes we read books for the cute photo ops okay?).  Grab a copy from my Bookshop shop or your favorite indie bookstore!  You won’t regret it.

LOOK: Bodysuit - Revolve; Shorts - Madewell; Sandals - Target

I am loving the bodysuit, jean shorts combo for this summer, so naturally this outfit will be on repeat.  This blush bodysuit is super comfy and not too revealing, plus it has the cutest back!  I’ve paired it with some Madewell shorts, because Madewell is my go-to and let’s be honest one could spend a thousand hours scrolling to find the perfect jean short, so I just went with what I know and they are fab!  Complete the look with a strappy sandal and you’re ready for happy hour, reading at the park, or a summer street fest!  I can’t wait for more summer book looks!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I’d love to know what you’ve got at the top of your summer reading list!  I’m always so ambitious with summer reading, but I somehow never end up reading as much as I think I will!  Oh well...such is life!  Enjoy your weekend, trendy readers!

Happy Reading!

-Amy-
