The Guest List
“I’m not even aware of the champagne glass leaving my hand until it explodes at my feet.”
Who’s been on your patio guest list this fall? It’s just me and my little fam over here! With patio season quickly coming to a close in Chicago, all we can do is hold out hope that the outdoor heater game will be strong this year, and that maybe we can hold on to some safe, outdoor drinking and eating for a just a little while longer.
I recently finished The Guest List by Lucy Foley and it was the perfect mood-setting book for October with its eerie vibes and dark, rainstormy mood. It’s about the wedding of the year between Jules--a magazine publisher--and WIll, an up-and-coming actor, who have chosen a remote location that is haunting in both in its appearance and in its desolation. Once on the island, there is really no way off for the guests until the weekend is over. That’s how you know something big is about to go down. A seemingly perfect union turns out to be not-so-perfect after all. And aaaalllll the characters have a motive to commit the act that brings the entire affair to a screeching halt. It’s very much a what’s-going-to-happen that turns into a whodunit real fast.
I really enjoyed this book, and it has been a while since I have read any thrillers, so it was a much welcome page-turner for me. While the love story between Jules and Will was a little flat (maybe intentionally?), the rest of the story(ies) kept me interested and curious the whole time. I thought Lucy Foley’s intertwining and connecting of the characters from all different points in their lives was so well written. I often wonder how authors have the foresight to write all these connections in. It’s like Ooohhh that person was actually the same person as this!! And, Waaaaiit she’s related to him!?! OMG! I did a lot of that as I devoured the final chapters of this book, which were so short and concise that it made the ending so fun (and fast) to read. Not gonna lie sometimes when you can just zip through so many pages of a book in a short amount of time, it’s sort of the best. I feel so accomplished. It reminded me a lot of The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda. It almost even has the same cover. But then again a lot of these psychological thrillers have a dark, rainy, ominous cover. If you’re looking for a quick, entertaining read, The Guest List is a great choice. If you’ve read it, what did you think? Now I’ve got to narrow down what my next thriller will be…taking all the suggestions!
Sweater is from Target, but it looks super fancy so that’s always a plus. Love the ruffle sleeve, and you can currently always find me with a front tuck. Also: ATHLETA masks always.
Happy Reading!
