Finlay Donovan Is Killing It

Hi, everyone!  Reading anything good lately?  I just finished a few nonfiction books, so my reading feels heavy and slow lately, but I just started a new suspense novel and I can’t wait to get back to it!  Today I’m sharing a book with a main character who seems just as frazzled as I do trying to juggle all of things and wear all of the hats.  The difference here is I am not a murderer.  :)  Hope you enjoy reading a bit about Finlay!

“It's a widely known fact that most moms are ready to kill someone by eight-thirty AM on any given morning.  On the particular morning of Tuesday, October eighth, I was ready by seven forty-five.”

BOOK: Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

Finlay Donovan seems to be landing in one stressful life situation after another, so much so that she just cannot seem to keep her shit together.  And rightfully so.  She’s behind on her book-writing, her kids are a constant handful, and her ex-husband’s self-righteous meddling is just completely unnecessary.  Basically more drama is NOT what she needs right now.  Like at all.  Little does Finlay know, however, that she is about to experience next-level stress from the most unlikely of situations.  When she is mistaken to be a murderer-for-fire, Finlay finds herself caught between a moral dilemma and breach of sanity.  Should she...shouldn’t she...and is she crazy for thinking that she could use the money, or that any of this is even real?  When Finlay agrees to the deal (murder) at hand, one thing leads to another and all of the sudden she is so entangled that there’s no turning back.  Even with the constant skittishness, the WTF wondering, and the looking-over-her-shoulder fear, Finlay still can’t decide if she’s in too deep or not deep enough.  After all, her publisher is waiting on a new crime novel, and her endeavors are giving her ALL the material for a bestseller.

This book is all about what happens when things don’t quite go as planned.  Finlay didn’t mean to kill anyone, but did she?  And if she didn’t do it, who did?  FDIKI is chick-lit drama at its most outlandish.  It’s highly entertaining, but if you’re looking for a believable story, this ain’t it.  Like this would NEVER actually happen.  I do think its outlandishness is what gives it its charm, though!  I resonated with the way that Finlay is quirky and  can’t quite seem to get a handle on life, yet she charges forward anyway with no (okay maybe a few) regrets.  FDIKI is another great read to add to your summer list...mindless, fun, and can be read while sipping seltzers!  Is that my barometer for books now?  Can I read this with my Whiteclaw or no?   Not to mention the cutest cover that begs to be recreated in photos!  I see you, bookstagram!  You’re killing it!  See what I did there?

SIDE NOTES: 1) I haven’t felt so seen by an opening line (shown at the top of the post) from a book as much as this one in a really long time.  I mean, I’m not saying it’s “Call me Ishmael” status, but the accuracy is just there.  I was like...yep that’s about right!  (cue deep breathing exercises lolololol). And 2), I feel like I’ve read a lot of books lately with a main character who is a down-on-their-luck writer.  Is that a theme in contemporary fiction that I am just now discovering?

LOOK:  Turtleneck - Loft (linked similar from Lulu’s); Jeans - Madewell; Shoes - Target (linked similar from DSW); Sunglasses - Dolce & Gabbana

I love when a #booklook requires minimal effort to put together, so naturally this cover wins because it basically screams “Wear a black turtleneck for this one!”  This ribbed turtle is from Loft and it is very soft and I am afraid to wash it on account of I always ruin the softness.  ALWAYS.  It comes in other colors AND you can get either long or short sleeves–huge bonus.  I’m a long-sleeve gal because I am freezing at all times, but that didn’t stop me from buying the short-sleeve one too even though I knew I would rarely (if ever) wear it.  A black turtleneck is a major wardrobe staple, so I went staple on staple for this look by pairing it with some new Madewell boyfriend jeans that are actually not hideous on me.

Thanks for stopping by!  I’d love to hear what you thought of this book if you’ve read it, or this look if you’ve shopped it, are thinking about it, or you just like it!  Leave me a comment or send me a message on IG @thetrendyreader!

Happy Reading!
