Firefly Lane

Hi, everyone!  Thanks for stopping by!  Today I am sharing a book look that has me ready for spring/summer to be here to stay!  We’re so close!  I hope you were able to get some new books at your favorite indie bookstores for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday.  I spent way too much money adding books to my already lengthy TBR pile.  I’ll get to them all eventually, right??

I’ve got a new book look for you with a Kristin Hannah book from way back. How did I miss this one? So many thoughts about Firefly Lane...not my favorite KH novel, but still enjoyable.  Here’s a quick summary and review for ya!  Have you read it/watched it yet?

BOOK: Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

"That was the thing about best friends.  Like sisters and mothers, they could piss you off and make you cry and break your heart, but in the end, when the chips were down, they were there, making you laugh even in your darkest hours."

Kate and Tully become an unlikely pair during the summer of 1974, skyrocketing to best-friendom and an inseparability that surprised Kate more than it did Tully.  Tully is the cool girl with a drugged-out mom, and Kate is the unpopular girl from a stable home with a loving family.  Although they meet right before high school, their friendship lasts long into adulthood, and the two face together all that life throws their way.  Well, almost.  Their friendship is not without its trying times, and when a big falling out threatens to keep them apart forever, Tully and Kate realize what it’s like to face the world without one another.  Are they too broken to find their way back to one another (and is it too late?), or will they be able to salvage the years of friendship that made them TullyandKate, the girls from Firefly Lane?

For me, this one was just okay.  I don’t think I ever really shipped (that’s what the kids are saying these days) Kate and Tully as real friends.  Like who treats their best friend like Tully treated Kate basically their whole friendship?  And how did Kate not see that Tully just needed her to always be on the back burner, ready to pick up the pieces when they fell?  Idk, I just didn’t get the besties-for-the-resties vibe from the two of them.  Kate always seemed annoyed with Tully and Tully always seemed to be taking advantage of Kate in some way.  So to be an almost-500 page book about two friends, I thought it lacked in the “actually friends” department.

I think it goes without saying (because any book that is over 400 pages better be a knockout) that I think this book could have been A LOT shorter, especially given how it ended.  I was expecting much more than a fizzle out, which is what it ended up being, imho.  I expected Kate to finally come to her senses and realize she had been Tully’s doormat all these years, but that did not happen.  Not only did it not happen, but the person that loses time and time again is Kate.  Poor Kate!  Right!?

I am usually weeping during and at the end of most KH novels, and I *almost* cried at this one, so I guess that tells me I wasn’t wowed.  Nevertheless, I will still read anything and everything Kristin Hannah writes because I just love her so much.  I gotta say, though, that the length of her books can make them a grind sometimes.  Now I have to watch the Firefly Lane show on Netflix!  Has anyone watched?  Better/worse/same as the book?  I’m hoping to get to it soon!

LOOK: Skirt - Loft; Top/Bodysuit - Abercrombie; Shoes - DSW (Mine are old, but I linked a similar pair.)

This outfit is super spring-y and I love it so much!  Give me somewhere to wear it!  I am usually anti bodysuits because I never know how to wear them (like do I wear underwear still?? Yes, right?? No?? I honestly don’t know.) or they don’t fit right, but this one from Abercrombie (hello high school!) has been a winner so far!  The color is a little different IRL than it looks on the screen, but I didn’t mind the difference because the fit and feel are that good.  I paired the ‘suit with this white button-down skirt from Loft which tbh is a little see-through but not a total loss if you can wear a light color on top.

I’d love to hear what you thought of this book if you’ve read it, or this look if you’ve shopped it, are thinking about it, or you just like it!  Leave me a comment or send me a message on IG @thetrendyreader!

Happy Reading!

-Amy-
